What Is Pallet Grading?

Pallet grading is a standardized system for classifying the condition and usability of used pallets. While there is no single universal grading standard, most suppliers use an A/B/C system (or #1/#2/#3). The grade reflects the pallet's structural integrity, cosmetic condition, and suitability for various applications.

Grade A — Premium / Like New

Grade A pallets are in excellent condition with no broken boards, no major staining, and minimal cosmetic wear. They may have been used only once or twice. These pallets are ideal for pharmaceutical, food, and retail applications where appearance and cleanliness matter. They can be racked, stacked, and automated without issue.

Grade B — Standard / Good

Grade B pallets are the workhorse of the used pallet market. They may have minor board repairs, slight staining, or cosmetic imperfections, but they are fully functional and structurally sound. Grade B is the most cost-effective choice for general warehousing, distribution, and shipping. They represent the best value for most businesses.

Grade C — Economy / Budget

Grade C pallets show more visible wear: multiple repairs, discoloration, rough surfaces, or slight warping. They are suitable for one-way shipping, internal warehouse use, or non-customer-facing applications. While they may not look pretty, they do the job at the lowest cost.

Combo / Mixed Grade

Some suppliers offer combo loads — mixed pallets of various grades at a blended price point. This is a great option if you have diverse needs: Grade A for outgoing shipments, Grade B for warehouse use, and Grade C for internal transfers. Combo loads offer maximum value with minimal waste.

How Grade Affects Pricing

Expect Grade A pallets to cost 50–100% more than Grade C. Grade B sits in the middle and offers the best value for most applications. Volume discounts apply across all grades. At Oakland Pallets, we provide honest grading, consistent quality, and competitive pricing at every level.
