How It All Started
In 2009, Malcolm Aldridge was working as a logistics coordinator at a freight forwarding company near the Port of Oakland. Every week, he watched forklifts stack thousands of perfectly good pallets into dumpsters and roll-off containers bound for the landfill. Some were barely scratched. Most had years of useful life left. Yet the math was simple for the companies discarding them: new pallets were cheap enough, and nobody wanted to deal with sorting, storing, or reselling the used ones.
That waste haunted Malcolm. He grew up in East Oakland, the son of a carpenter who taught him that wood was a resource to be respected, not thrown away. He started doing the math himself — and the numbers were staggering. The Port of Oakland alone generated tens of thousands of discarded pallets every month. Across the Bay Area, the figure climbed into the hundreds of thousands. Most of that wood was structurally sound. It just needed someone willing to do the unglamorous work of collecting, inspecting, repairing, and redistributing it.
So Malcolm cashed out his modest savings, rented a flatbed truck, and leased a small gravel lot off G Street. The first few months were brutal — working alone from dawn until dark, driving dock to dock asking warehouse managers if he could haul away their unwanted pallets for free. Most said yes. A few laughed. But slowly, a yard full of sorted, graded pallets began to take shape, and local businesses discovered they could buy quality pallets at a steep discount.
Word spread fast. Within a year, Malcolm had more pallets coming in than he could process alone. He hired his first two employees — yard workers who shared his belief that this work mattered. They built a makeshift repair station out of salvaged lumber and began fixing damaged pallets instead of scrapping them. A pallet that would have cost a customer $12 new could be repaired for $3 and perform identically. The value proposition was undeniable.
By 2012, Oakland Pallets had outgrown the original lot and moved into the 30,000-square-foot G Street facility the company still calls home. That same year, a regional food distributor signed on as the first major recurring client, committing to 5,000 pallets per month. The contract was a turning point — proof that this wasn't just a scrappy side hustle but a legitimate business addressing a real market need.
Today, Oakland Pallets employs over 30 people, operates a fleet of 12 delivery trucks, and has recycled more than 2 million pallets. But the mission hasn't changed since day one: rescue every pallet we can, repair what others would discard, and prove that sustainability and profitability aren't competing goals — they're the same goal.
Our Journey
Humble Beginnings
Malcolm Aldridge rents a 3,000 sq ft gravel lot off G Street with a single flatbed truck and a borrowed forklift. Operating solo for the first four months, he collects discarded pallets from loading docks around the Port of Oakland, sorts them by hand, and resells them to local warehouses. Revenue in year one: $47,000.
First Hire, First Workshop
Demand outpaces what one person can handle. Malcolm brings on two part-time yard workers and builds a rudimentary repair station from salvaged lumber. The team begins offering basic pallet refurbishment — replacing cracked boards, hammering down protruding nails — doubling the resale value of damaged pallets.
First Major Contract
A regional food distributor signs on as Oakland Pallets' first recurring client, committing to 5,000 pallets per month. The contract provides the financial stability to lease the current 30,000 sq ft facility on G Street, a massive upgrade that includes covered storage, a dedicated repair bay, and room for a proper grading operation.
The Million-Pallet Mark
Oakland Pallets processes its one-millionth pallet since founding. The company now employs 14 full-time staff across yard operations, repair, delivery, and administration. A second and third delivery truck are added to the fleet to keep up with growing demand across Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
Recycling Milestone
Reached 500,000 pallets recycled in a single year. Invested heavily in the repair workshop with pneumatic nail guns, board cutters, and a dedicated quality inspection line. Launched the company's first formal grading system — A, B, and C tiers — giving customers clear, honest expectations about the product they receive.
Custom Pallet Division
Responding to growing requests from manufacturers with non-standard specifications, Oakland Pallets opens a custom fabrication division. Using a mix of reclaimed and sustainably sourced lumber, the team begins building pallets to exact dimensions, weight ratings, and material requirements — all while maintaining the company's zero-waste philosophy.
Heat Treatment Certified
Installed a state-of-the-art ISPM-15 certified heat treatment kiln, enabling Oakland Pallets to serve businesses with international shipping compliance needs. The kiln processes up to 400 pallets per cycle, reaching core temperatures of 56 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes — the global standard for phytosanitary treatment without chemicals.
Pandemic Resilience
While many businesses shut down, the supply chain never stopped — and neither did Oakland Pallets. Designated an essential business, the team implemented safety protocols and ramped up operations to meet surging demand from grocery distributors, medical suppliers, and e-commerce fulfillment centers across the Bay Area.
Fleet Expansion
Expanded the transportation fleet to 12 trucks — including flatbeds, box trucks, and a 53-foot trailer — offering Bay Area-wide pickup and delivery with 24-hour turnaround on rush orders. Launched route-optimized scheduling software to minimize empty miles and fuel consumption, cutting per-delivery emissions by 30%.
2 Million Pallets & Beyond

Our Facility
Our 30,000-square-foot facility on G Street sits just minutes from the Port of Oakland, placing us at the heart of the Bay Area's logistics corridor. The location isn't an accident — proximity to the port, major highways, and the region's densest concentration of warehouses and distribution centers means faster pickups, shorter delivery routes, and lower costs for our clients.
The yard is organized into distinct zones for maximum efficiency. Incoming pallets arrive at the intake area, where they're unloaded, photographed for inventory, and moved to the sorting line. From there, pallets are graded by our inspection team and routed to one of three destinations: the ready-to-sell inventory racks, the repair workshop, or the recycling station for dismantling and material recovery.
Our covered repair bay houses 8 dedicated workstations equipped with pneumatic nail guns, board saws, and dimensional jigs. On a typical day, the repair team processes 300 to 500 pallets — replacing cracked deckboards, reinforcing stringers, removing protruding fasteners, and bringing each pallet back to spec. Adjacent to the repair bay is our ISPM-15 certified heat treatment kiln, capable of processing 400 pallets per cycle.
The fleet yard accommodates all 12 of our delivery vehicles, with a maintenance bay where Cedric's team handles routine inspections and minor repairs in-house. We also maintain a 5,000-square-foot covered storage area for premium-grade and custom pallets, protecting finished inventory from weather until it ships out — often within 48 hours of order placement.
