Why Food Safety Starts with the Pallet
In the food and beverage industry, contamination can occur at any point in the supply chain — including from the pallet. Wooden pallets that carry chemical residues, harbor mold, or have protruding nails can compromise product safety and violate FDA regulations under FSMA. A single contaminated pallet entering a food processing facility can trigger a recall costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and permanent brand damage.
That's why we maintain a dedicated inventory of food-grade pallets: Grade A wood pallets that have been inspected for contamination, mold, and structural defects, plus FDA-compliant plastic pallets for the highest hygiene standards. All wood pallets are available with ISPM-15 heat treatment. Our food-grade inventory is physically segregated from industrial pallets in our facility, with separate receiving, inspection, and staging areas.
Every pallet in our food-grade pipeline undergoes a 12-point inspection covering structural integrity, surface contamination, mold presence, odor, moisture content, nail protrusion, and dimensional accuracy. Pallets that don't pass are downgraded to industrial use — they never enter the food supply chain.
Contamination Prevention Protocol
Our contamination prevention system addresses the three primary risk vectors for pallet-borne food contamination: biological (mold, bacteria, insects), chemical (pesticides, industrial fluids, cleaning agents), and physical (nails, splinters, loose wood debris).
Biological Controls
Heat treatment to 56 degrees C core temperature eliminates insects, larvae, and reduces mold spore viability. Moisture content monitoring keeps pallets below the 19% threshold where mold growth accelerates. Visual inspection under high-intensity lighting catches surface mold that is invisible under warehouse conditions.
Chemical Controls
We track the prior-use history of every pallet entering our food-grade pipeline. Pallets with chemical industry exposure are permanently excluded. No methyl bromide fumigation is used — heat treatment only. Our storage areas are free from pesticides, petroleum products, and industrial solvents.
Physical Controls
Every pallet is inspected for protruding nails, loose boards, splinters, and foreign embedded objects. Deck boards are checked for cracks that could harbor debris. Food-grade pallets receive flush-driven nails and sanded edges where contact with packaging occurs.
Sector-Specific Solutions
Produce & Fresh Foods
Clean, contaminant-free pallets for perishable goods. Grade A stock with no chemical exposure history. Inspected for mold, staining, odor, and foreign material. Dedicated inventory pool separated from industrial-use pallets.
Packaged Foods
Consistent, racking-rated pallets for warehousing and distribution of canned, boxed, and bottled products. Uniform dimensions ensure compatibility with automated warehouse systems and pallet jacks.
Beverage Distribution
36x36 and 48x40 pallets optimized for cases, kegs, and bottles. Reinforced deck boards for the concentrated weight of liquid loads. Block pallet options for 4-way access in tight loading bays.
Cold Storage & Frozen
Plastic pallets rated for freezer environments down to -20 degrees F. No moisture absorption, no mold risk, no splitting from freeze-thaw cycles. Hygienic design allows pressure washing between loads.
Bakery & Confection
Pallets free from sawdust residue and loose wood fiber that can contaminate open-air bakery products. Planed deck surfaces and tight board spacing prevent crumbs and packaging from falling through.
Dairy & Protein
High-hygiene pallets for USDA-inspected facilities. Smooth surfaces reduce bacterial harborage points. Available in plastic or Grade A hardwood with moisture-resistant treatments for dairy cooler environments.
Regulatory Compliance
Food safety regulations have expanded significantly over the past decade, and pallets are increasingly under scrutiny. Our compliance program ensures that every pallet we deliver meets or exceeds current regulatory requirements.
FSMA Compliance
The Food Safety Modernization Act requires preventive controls throughout the supply chain — including pallets. Our food-grade pallets meet FSMA requirements for sanitary transportation, with documentation to prove it during facility audits.
FDA 21 CFR Part 117
Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations for food facilities extend to materials that contact or support food products. Our pallets are sourced, stored, and delivered in compliance with FDA preventive controls guidance.
ISPM-15 Heat Treatment
All wood pallets are available with ISPM-15 certified heat treatment, required for international shipments and preferred by many domestic food companies. Core temperature reaches 56°C for a minimum of 30 minutes to eliminate pest risk.
Third-Party Audit Ready
SQF, BRC, and GFSI-benchmarked audits increasingly scrutinize pallet sourcing. We provide treatment certificates, chain-of-custody logs, material safety data, and supplier qualification documents for your audit binder.
Cold Chain Pallet Solutions
Cold chain logistics present unique challenges for pallets. Temperature cycling between freezer storage (-20 degrees F), refrigerated transport (34-38 degrees F), and ambient dock areas causes wood to expand, contract, and eventually crack. Moisture condensation during temperature transitions promotes mold growth and weakens structural integrity. For facilities operating in continuous cold environments, wood pallets have a significantly shortened lifespan.
Our cold chain program offers two solutions: premium hardwood pallets selected for moisture resistance and dimensional stability in cold environments, and HDPE plastic pallets specifically designed for permanent cold storage use. Plastic pallets eliminate moisture absorption entirely, remain dimensionally stable across the full temperature range, and can be pressure-washed and sanitized between uses.
For clients operating mixed environments — moving product from freezer to cooler to ambient staging — we recommend a hybrid program using plastic pallets for in-storage positions and Grade A wood for outbound shipping. This approach balances hygiene requirements with cost efficiency.

How a Regional Organic Distributor Achieved Zero Pallet-Related Contamination Incidents
A mid-size organic produce distributor operating out of the Central Valley was facing recurring issues with pallet-borne mold contaminating their cold storage facility. Their previous supplier mixed food and industrial pallets in the same inventory, and three separate instances of visible mold on inbound pallets had been flagged during SQF audits. Prescott, their operations director, reached out to Oakland Pallets after the third audit finding.
We implemented a dedicated food-grade supply program with the following elements: segregated inventory held exclusively for their account, 12-point inspection on every outbound pallet, moisture content verification below 18%, and full chain-of-custody documentation delivered with each shipment. For their freezer rooms, we transitioned 40% of their pallet positions to HDPE plastic pallets.
Within the first six months, mold-related quality holds dropped to zero. Their next SQF audit scored pallet management at 100% compliance. Delaney, their quality assurance manager, reported that auditors specifically commended the traceability documentation as a best practice. Over 18 months, the program has maintained a perfect record with zero pallet-related contamination incidents.
