Lumber prices, sustainability regulations, and automation trends are reshaping the pallet industry. Here's what businesses should prepare for.

The pallet industry is entering 2025 with a mix of challenges and opportunities. Here's our analysis of the trends that will shape pallet pricing, availability, and operations in the coming year.

Lumber pricing: After the extreme volatility of 2021–2023, lumber prices have stabilized somewhat, but remain above pre-pandemic levels. We expect modest price increases in 2025 as housing starts recover and demand picks up. This makes recycled pallets an even more attractive option.

Sustainability regulations: California's SB 54 and similar extended producer responsibility (EPR) laws in other states are putting pressure on businesses to reduce packaging waste. While pallets aren't directly targeted, they're part of the broader packaging lifecycle that regulators are scrutinizing.

Automation: Automated pallet inspection, robotic repair, and AI-powered grading are moving from pilot projects to production deployments. These technologies will improve consistency, reduce costs, and enable higher throughput at recycling facilities.

Our advice: Lock in supply agreements now while pricing is relatively stable. Diversify your pallet sources to include both wood and plastic. And start tracking your pallet usage data — it will be valuable as sustainability reporting requirements increase.
